At a stormy Working Committee meeting this evening (May 5) United National Party (UNP) leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has agreed to drastic and ‘revolutionary’ changes in the party constitution, says spokesman Gayantha Karunatilleke.

Following the Working Committee meeting this evening, a committee has been appointed to consider proposals to the changes in the party constitution. Members of this committee with Parliamentarian Joseph Michael Perera as its chairman include MPs John Amaratunga, Kabeer Hashim, Lakshman Kiriella, Wijedasa Rajapaksha and Attorney-at-Law Roland Perera.

Opposition and UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has agreed to drastic changes and also to bring in several young and new faces into active roles in the party, the UNP spokesman told Adaderana this evening.

The Committee has given members time till Monday, May 10 to forward proposals regarding the necessary changes. These proposals will be taken up when the Working Committee meets next week and forwarded to Mr. Wickremesinghe.

Once agreed upon, the proposals will be put forward for ratification at the special party convention to be held in July, according to Mr. Karunatilleke.
