An individual was shot dead by the police at around 10.30 a.m. today (March 02), during the inspection of a vehicle on the Naula-Elahera road.

An argument had ensued when a group of police officers attempted to inspect two people who were about to leave in a three-wheeler.

As it escalated, the police have opened fire at the 37-year-old, who was identified as Thushara Chandraratne.

According to reports, the deceased had obstructed the cops and tried to grab the firearm from one of the officers.

Another police officer has then fired a shot at the ground in an attempt to break off the fight and then opened fire at the man in question.

The police also revealed that 14 packets of heroin were found on the deceased.

However, a three-wheeler owner at the location told Ada Derana that the deceased and his brother-in-law had come to hire a vehicle to take their dog to the veterinary surgeon.

The post-mortem of the deceased will be conducted at the Nalanda Hospital and Naula Police is probing the incident further.
