The Inspector General of Police said this evening (May 26) that he was giving a period of one week for vehicle owners to remove the tints on their vehicle shutters.
The police were aware of several instances where crimes were committed using vehicles with heavily tinted shutters where the occupants could not be recognized, IGP Mahinda Balasuriya said during a media briefing at police Headquarters.
He said after the ultimatum of one week from today, police would prosecute any vehicle owners who used tints on their shutters. However, he added that where tints had to be used for shutters due to some reasons, permission would have to be obtained from the Defence Ministry.
On red number plates (garage or unregistered) number plates, the IGP said that such a number plate could be used on vehicles being transported from the port to the owners’ showroom or garage. And from there to the Registration of Motor Vehicles office for registration purposes.
Others using such red or garage number plates would also be prosecuted, IGP Balasuriya said.
