President informs Speaker he will resign within today

The Speaker of Parliament says President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has informed him that he will submit his resignation within today (July 13).

“His Excellency, the President who is away from the country contacted me by phone, and stated that he will resign from the presidency as he stated before. He also added that the relevant resignation letter will be handed over to me officially, within today itself.”

“Accordingly, the procedure we have planned within the Parliament will end by electing a new President on the 20th of July. So, I request the public not to have any doubt on the matter, and to act peacefully,” he said.
