One of the premier sports club in Sri Lanka, the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) launched a website www.ssclights.comto garner funds for its ambitious floodlights project fot the cricket grounds.

The website was launched at the beginning of the star studded IIFA charity cricket match and was inauguarated by Mahela Jayawardene, Aravinda de Silva, Sports Minister C.B. Ratnayake and Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa among others.

This is what the website has to say regarding the club:

Way back in 1899 a group of old Royalists and Weslites formed the Singhalese Sports Club. The original site until the early 1950s was alongside the museum on a part of the Victoria Park. Since then the Club has been at Maitland Placewhich is in the very heart of Colombo. Over the years we have had a Prime Minister, Sir John Kotalawela and a President, J.R. Jayewardene as presidents of the Club, which has grown from small beginnings to a membership of over 6000, and has facilities besides cricket which is its prime focus, two swimming pools, several tennis courts, badminton and squash courts, modern gymnasium, billiards and snooker room, air conditioned bars and restaurants to give the discerning membership a home away from home.

As we launch our fundraising for lighting our cricket grounds, we can reflect on the club as being the premier cricket club in the country having won more championships, produced more Sri Lankan cricketers than any other and more Sri Lankan captains than any other, amongst the last few of whom are Arjuna Ranatunga who led the country to win the World Cup in 1996, Marvan Attapattu, Mahela Jayawardena who led us to the finals in 2007.
