June 13, 2010   01:08 pm

The government is waiting for legal advice on proposed constitutional amendments. Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratna said that a cabinet paper to bring about constructional amendments was presented by him and it has received cabinet approval.

In an interview with BBC Sandaehaya he said that no final decisions have been made and awaiting for legal advice.

“Once the legal experts have made their recommendations available the proposed amendments will be forwarded to Parliament,” Prime Minister said.

Responding to opposition protests on removing restrictions on the number of terms a president could hold, the prime minister said “nothing has been finalised and the opposition is carrying out a baseless campaign”.

Once the legal advice is received the government would decide on what amendments will be put forward to parliament, added Prime Minister Jayaratne. – (BBC)
