Deadline for filing income tax returns extended

The deadline for filing income tax returns has been extended for another week from November 30, Finance State Minister Shehan Semasinghe says.

Responding to a question raised by MP J.C. Alawathuwala during the parliamentary session this morning (Dec. 01), the lawmaker mentioned that penalties will not be charged during this period.

Alawathuwala raised concerns about a malfunction reported in the system used for filing income tax returns.

The deadline was initially set for November 30, however, many people are left without any means to file their income tax returns as a result of this technical failure, the parliamentarians added, seeking a response from the state minister in this regard.

Semasinghe explained that network traffic was detected in the system yesterday with people trying to file their income tax returns before the deadline expires.

“As a solution for this, we have given a week’s time to file income tax returns. The income tax returns filed during this period will be considered to have submitted on November 30, and will not be subjected to any penalties,” the state minister added.
