Buddhist devotees visiting Anuradhapura for Poson celebrations have been urged by the Central Environmental Authority to refrain from bringing any form of Polythene to the historical region.

The CEA has pointed out that the polythene and plastic items disposed in the area by devotees has badly affected the ecosystem of Anuradhapura where Poson celebrations are held annually.

However as large numbers of devotees are expected to visit Anuradhapura today 120 garbage baskets have been placed in the proximity of the Sri Maha Bodi and Ruwanwalisaya by the Central Environment Authority. According to the CEA they have been given a helping hand by the Anurdhapura Municipal Council and provincial authorities in the task.

The CEA say that they have begun a special waste management program in the Anuradhapura region which will be affective until tomorrow.
