Two writ applications seeking an order directing the Elections Commissioner to hold the local government (LG) polls have been fixed for support on January 18 by the Supreme Court.

Filed by a group of parliamentarians of the opposition, the two writ applications were called before the Supreme Court judge bench consisting of Priyantha Jayawardena, Kumuduni Wickremesinghe and Achala Vengappuli this morning (Dec 16).

One writ application had been filed by SJB’s general secretary MP Ranjith Madduma Bandara and MP Prof. G.L. Peiris of Freedom People’s Congress. The other one was put forward by opposition MPs Dayasiri Jayasekara, Lakshman Kiriella, Anura Priyadarshana Yapa and M.A. Sumanthiran.

The Election Commission’s chairman and its members have been named as the respondents of these writ applications.
