June 28, 2010   12:01 pm

The National Peace Council says that the Sri Lankan government should agree to the conditions set forth by the EU. As a responsible government, Sri Lanka shouldn’t ignore these conditions.

Executive Director of the National Peace Council Jehan Perera said that this is a serious issue that will affect the country’s economy and that lots of jobs are at stake.

He also said the government shouldn’t be unhappy about the conditions set forth by the EU because these conditions will improve the state of the country and the government should implement them even without a foreign organization asking them to do so.

He further said that if the government has any difficulty abiding by any of these conditions, they should explain the reasons to the European Commission and negotiate these terms.

He said not agreeing to these conditions will have unfavorable economic consequences and will be a blow to the job market. It will also mar the image of Sri Lankaamong the world and will send out a message that the Sri Lankan government is not serious about the human rights related issues. He also said that this will worsen Sri Lanka’s situation with the UN.

He said the ultimatum given by the EU is a good opportunity for Sri Lankato improve its government system to benefit the economy.
