Three suspects under arrest over killing of taxi driver

Three suspects have been arrested in connection with the killing of the driver of a hired vehicle at Ingiriya.

The arrest was made on Thursday (Dec 29) in the area of Ambalantota, according to the police.

It is reported that two of them, who were directly involved in the murder, had formerly served in the navy and the air force. The other arrestee was found to have pawned the two mobile phones belonging to the murder victim.

The perpetrators had murdered the driver in question on December 14 by assaulting him after tying his limbs and gagging him.

After killing the driver, they had thrown his body off a slope near the Ketakerella Bridge in Nambapana, Ingiriya and stolen his car which has an estimated value of Rs. 8 million.

Meanwhile, two more suspects who were involved in the murder are still at large.

The victim, named Ashoka Bandara, was identified as a 48-year-old father of one from Galloluwa, Minuwangoda.

Police investigations uncovered that the four suspects from Ambalantota had intended to sell the auto parts of a stolen vehicle to find money.

The three arrestees are slated to be produced before the Horana Magistrate’s Court later today.
