The President has refused to accept Wimal Weerawansa’s resignation form his post as Cabinet Minister, says the Jathika Nidahas Peramuna (JNP). However, his fast unto death will continue as planned, the JNP said.

At an unscheduled media briefing at the site where Minister Wimal Weerawansa is continuing his fast unto death, former Parliamentarian Jayantha Samaraweera said that certain sections were attempting to embarrass the government over the issue. Since he was concerned about the situation, Mr. Weerawansa had sent the letter of resignation to President Mahinda Rajapaksa and was continuing only as a member of the JNP (or National Freedom Front).

Former Parliamentarian M.M. Muzammil, speaking to the media at the same briefing said that their protest was only against the panel appointed by UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon and not against the United Nations.

“Though we had intimated the reasons for the protest to the UN as well as several parties involved with the organization, we have still not received any response. So we will continue our protest,” Mr. Muzammil said.
