Discussions are now being held between President Mahinda Rajapaksa and United National Party (UNP) leader Ranil Wickremesinghe at Temple Trees, states the President’s Media Unit.
Mr. Wickremesinghe met President Rajapaksa on Saturday morning and discussed the proposed constitutional amendments among other matters. After the discussion Ranil Wickremesinghe proceeded to Kadawatha where the UNP kicked off its first protest meeting against the cost of living and other issues.
Mr. Wickremesinghe at his Kadawatha speech said that his party would support any amendments to the constitution that would benefit the masses, not a single family.
He also said that he had told the President that he (Wickremesinghe) could not take a lone decision and the party had to be consulted. Ranil Wickremesinghe told the meeting that he has requested an appointment with the President for another round of discussions today (Monday) where other UNP seniors would also be present.
The UNP had earlier shown its opposition to amending the provision in the current constitution for one person to hold the office of Executive Presidency for more than two terms.
