Midea CFL Awarded SLS Certification

* Partners Katspree Holdings hail Landmark Achievement 

Colombo, Sri Lanka, July 2010 – What began as a successful venture for Midea Group, China a year ago in unison with Katspree Holdings, Sri Lanka has now reached an all-time high.


Just a year after its launch the Chinese company has been awarded the star rating and the prestigious SLS Certification for their introduction of Midea CFL bulbs into the local market. Katspree Holdings which evolved as a result of a merger between experienced lighting sales professionals and their commitment to provide the local market with a quality product. In celebration of their accomplishments thus far and to bestow due recognition, various dignitaries from both Sri Lanka and China were present at a glittering event at the Taj Samudra, Colombo expected to go down in the history of Midea Group. Further the presentations were made by the Sri Lanka Standards Institute and its authorized body, the Sustainable Energy Authority.


Furthermore the Managing Director, Katspree Holdings, Tyrone Smith voicing his opinion had this to say – “Such an award pays tribute to Midea’s eagerness to expand its horizons and stamp its authority as a leading manufacturer of electrical appliances. Their success in the lighting industry is yet another ‘feather in their cap’ and we at Katspree share their joy in this their moment. We have an obligatory commitment towards society and accept responsibility at all times as our primary emphasis is customer satisfaction.”


The GM, Midea Lighting, Mr. Zhang Wuli, and the Overseas Director for Sales & Marketing, Mr. Zenith Zang and the Asia Sales Director, Miss Umy Wu were the foreign representatives present. Moreover Katspree Holdings was represented by the following – in addition to the MD, Tyrone Smith, the Chairman, Mr. S. Chandrasekara, CEO, Mr. Ravi Sivakumar and two Directors of the company, Mr. V. Muhunden and Mr. S. Kumaraindiren were present at the gathering.


The guest of honour, Dr. L.N. Senaweera stated, “This is a momentous achievement by both Katspree Holdings and Midea Group in staking a claim for being the best in terms of both production and distribution of fluorescent lamps to the local market. Their partnership has undoubtedly paid rich dividends as the SLS mark gives their product a distinctive advantage over manufacturing companies that do not carry such a level of quality assurance on their goods and services. The accomplishment is quite commendable and I wish them all the very best in their future endeavours.


CEO, Katspree Holdings, Ravi Sivakumar added, “Through such an accomplishment Midea Group comes across as being not only a first among equals in the country but enhances and strengthens its presence as a global brand among its competitors.”


The awarding of SLS and Star Ratings was carried out after a team from Sri Lanka visited China where the bulbs performance was extensively scrutinized. It was only after the bulbs were deemed satisfactory that such an award was decided to be given.


While applauding the efforts of Midea Group and Katspree Holdings respectively, her Excellency the Ambassador for the People’s Republic of China, Yang Xiuping stated that, “I am extremely happy and proud of both Midea Group and Katspree Holdings. They have undoubtedly set the benchmark in the lighting industry and hence have established a strong claim to be the market leader in the not too distant future. Also such an award has undoubtedly strengthened ties between the two countries and has paved the way for more successful ventures in the future.”


Speaking on behalf of Midea Lighting, GM Zhang Wuli said, “As a company and a brand we aim to create a perception resembling stability in the minds of our consumers who are extremely important to us as we strive for an unparallel level of excellence in the future. We further wish to state that by using our product, consumers are guaranteed with value for money. Bulbs that will be shipped to Sri Lanka from now onwards will come with a 2 year warranty.”


It was also revealed that a number of related products will be introduced as part of the company’s portfolio in the near future.


Chairman of Katspree Holdings, Mr S Chandrasekera said, “With the general trend toward energy conservation, MIDEA’s line of compact fluorescent lighting is growing in popularity. CFLs are far more energy efficient than traditional incandescent bulbs, using approximately 80% less energy while producing the same light output. A single CFL bulb lasts from 8,000 to 10,000 hours or between 3 to 5 years.  MIDEA Lighting works in close partnership across 50 countries worldwide, helping businesses and individuals protect the environment through superior energy efficiency. We are indeed proud to be a part of this venture”.


Meanwhile several local officials were also present at the event. They were the General Manager of NERD Centre, Mr. G.B. Wimalaratne, Director General of Sustainable Energy Authority, Mr. C. Samarasinghe and last but not least the Director of Sustainable Energy Authority, Mr. R. Padmasiri.
