Russia assumes UN Security Council’s monthly presidency

July 31, 2010   03:59 pm

The Russian Federation is to assume the monthly rotating Presidency of the Security Council tomorrow, Sunday, August 01, states the United Nations.

In late June this year, the Russian Federation had slammed the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s decision to appoint a panel of experts to advise him on Sri Lanka’s alleged violations of human rights and humanitarian law during the final stages of the war against Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, without regard to Sri Lanka’s sovereignty.

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement criticized the UN Chief for not obtaining the opinion of the Security Council or the General Assembly before appointing the panel.
