Democratic National Alliance (DNA) parliamentarians Vijitha Herath, Ajith Kumara and Provincial Councillor Naleen Hewage  along with ten others have been remanded till August 16 after being produced before the Galle Magistrate’s court late Thursday evening.

The DNA activists were arrested by the Galle police on Thursday after they dispersed a protest march of the party urging for the release of its leader General (retired) Sarath Fonseka who is under detention pending Court Martial.

Police used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd. The DNA claimed police assault on a peaceful demonstration while police claimed that party activists had assaulted the police personnel.

The DNA claims that when its members went to the police to lodge complaints over the assault, MPs Vijith Herath, Ajith Kumara and Councillor Naleen Hewage had been arrested. DNA MP Arjuna Ranatunga whohad also gone to the police station at the same time had however been not arrested.
