The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) held a demonstration this evening (August 14) in front of the Fort railway station demanding the release of three of its members arrested by the Galle police and remanded on Thursday.
Democratic National Alliance (DNA) parliamentarians Vijitha Herath, Ajith Kumara and Provincial Councillor Naleen Hewage were remanded till August 16 after being produced before the Galle Magistrate’s court.
Addressing the demonstration in Fort, JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva said that when government Ministers were protesting opposite the UN office in Colombo and their supporters knocked the police personnel on their heads, it was called democracy. But when the DNA held a peaceful demonstration in Galle, the police used tear gas to disperse them and also assaulted the demonstrators.
“When three of our members went to the Galle police station to lodge a complaint regarding the assault, they were assaulted by the police and then arrested. How can three persons go to a police station and attack the police?” asked Mr. Silva.
