The Battaramulla Juveniles’ Court has directed the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (TRC) to halt 107 phonographic sites accessible through mobile phones featuring local youth. This follows reports filed by the Women and Children Unit of the Police.

Earlier, several websites containing phonographic material – videos and images – were banned in Sri Lanka following investigations by the Criminal Investigation Department. Some of these had contained material featuring Sri Lankan boys and girls as well.

Authorities had pointed out that such easily accessible pornographic materials were a threat to the culture of the country.

Operation of such web sites were a violation of the Amendment to the Publication Act No. 22 of 1983 and punishable by law.
