SC to deliver final decision to Speaker

August 31, 2010   03:24 pm

The Supreme Court accepted the bill on the government’s proposed constitutional amendments today. Accepting the bill the five member bench headed by Justice Shirani Bandaranayake stated that the Speaker will be informed of the final decision.

Meanwhile the Attorney General Mohan Peiris said that the draft contains clauses to do away with the two term restriction on the Presidential term and also that the President should be present in parliament once in three months to answer questions.

The JVP, Centre for Policy Alternatives and Dr. Ruwan Edirisinghe filed objections to the proposed amendments. Taking into consideration these objections the Supreme Court stated that it will take up the matter and deliver the final decision to the speaker in due course.
