VIDEO: Constitutional amendments bill is illegal - Mangala

September 3, 2010   01:32 pm

The new constitutional amendments bill is illegal, says UNP Parliamentarian Mangala Samaraweera. He said that attempting to pass a bill that removes the term limit of the executive presidency while a petition regarding the president’s second term election is still pending a verdict is illegal as well as unethical.

Addressing a media gathering Samaraweera also said that neither the President nor the government promised the people of that country that the presidential term limit will be removed when they campaigned for the General and Presidential elections. He also challenged the government to prove if such a promise was made.

Mangala Samaraweera stated that the people of the country didn’t elect this government to compile a new constitution and extend the president’s term limit. And he further said that the public will not accept the new constitutional amendments.

The Parliamentarian added that although some MPs are crossing over for personal privileges, there are members within the government who are against the route to a dictatorship and are depressed over the matter. But they don’t have backbone to standup for their opinion, he added.
