The President who is heading for a dictatorship will ruin himself, his Ministers, his own supporters and the future of his own family members. The Democratic National Alliance (DNA) is against the state of affairs, said Parliamentarian Sarath Fonseka.

Addressing a media briefing at the Parliamentary Complex during a break at the debate on the 18th Amendment to the Constitution, Mr. Fonseka said a constitution should not be amended to strengthen the hands of a President. If at all, it should be done for the welfare of the people.

As the DNA, he was promising, as he had done earlier before the Presidential Election, that he, together the other members will take the country forward as early as possible, Sarath Fonseka said.

“We are against a dictatorship. We are ready to go to jail in large numbers. At the moment only I am in jail. Soon there will be many more in prison the way things the dictatorship is moving ahead. Today is a sad day for us. It tantamounts to hammering the last nail on the coffin of democracy,” added the former Sri Lanka Army chief turned politician.
