One injured as Police Sergeant’s pistol accidentally fires in raid

A 28-year-old person has been injured after the service pistol of a police officer accidentally fired during a raid at an illegal gambling den in the Tissamaharama area.
A team of three police officers attached to Tissamaharama Police were dispatched at around 01.00 a.m. early this morning (31) to the location following a tip-off received by police.
Police said that the suspects had attempted to flee in various directions during the raid. While the police officers were trying to arrest the suspects, a scuffle arose between a Police Sergeant and the injured person where the Police Sergeant’s firearm had accidentally fired injuring the suspect.
The injured 28-year-old has subsequently been admitted to Hambantota Hospital for treatment.
Tissamaharama Police has launched an investigation into the incident.
