The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) and Lal Kantha are ignorant of the goose that lays golden eggs. Industrial development has just begun again. If the workers protest for more wages the factories may close throwing them out of employment, said Western Provincial Councillor Udaya Gammanpila.
Commenting on the statement by JVP member and former Parliamentarian Lal Kantha, who had said that the government should grant a wage increase of Rs. 8,500 to the workers through its next budget or else they would resort to trade union action, Mr. Gammanpila said they had forgotten the story of the goose with the golden eggs.
The industrial development has just begun after the end of a protracted war. The workers have to be a bit more patient. If they resort to strike action at this juncture it will only result in the industries coming to a standstill and workers being thrown out on to the streets. These industries are like the geese that lay golden eggs. If we kill these geese because of our greed for the golden eggs, we will be losing what we are getting now, said Udaya Gammanpila addressing the inauguration of the ‘Viskam Daskam’ exhibition of the Western Province Agrarian Development Authority at Janadhipathi Vidyalaya in Minuwangoda this evening (Sept. 23).
Western Province Chief Minister Prasanna Ranatunga, while addressing the crowd said that local entrepreneurs have to be given the fullest encouragement if the country is to win the newly waged development war.
