The police have taken two people into custody after gunshots were reported at Bondi Beach in Sydney on Sunday, according to New South Wales Police.

In a statement posted on social media platform X, the police said an operation was ongoing and urged members of the public to avoid the area.

“Two people are in police custody at Bondi Beach; however, the police operation is ongoing and we continue to urge people to avoid the area,” the police said, adding that people in the vicinity should follow all police directions and not cross police lines.

Another statement later said, “Ten people have been confirmed dead, including a man believed to be one of the shooters. The second alleged shooter is in a critical condition. At this time, a further 11 people are reported to be injured, two of which are police officers.”

Police also advised those already in the area to take shelter until further information becomes available.

An online footage showed a bystander tackling one of the attackers and successfully taking away his gun.

The attacker is then seen walking away. In the same video, another shooter is seen on top of a bridge, 50-100 meters (160-330 feet) away, shooting toward the bystander.

The beach was crowded with people, including families with children, and swimmers enjoying the water after a hot summer day.

An attack of this nature in a packed beachside location is likely sending shockwaves nationwide. More details are expected as the situation develops.
