Four Buddhist monks, including Ven. Balangoda Kassapa Thero and six other individuals who were arrested and subsequently remanded for allegedly violating coastal conservation laws by placing a Buddha statue at the Trincomalee Bodhiraja Viharaya have been further remanded.

The suspects have been further remanded until 2 February by the Trincomalee Magistrate’s Court.

The case is being heard in relation to a complaint filed by the Department of Coast Conservation and Coastal Resource Management, alleging that an unauthorised structure was erected and a Buddha statue placed within the coastal protection zone in Trincomalee town.

When the case was taken up again today, ten suspects, including four Buddhist monks who had been arrested and remanded up to today, were produced before court by prison officials.
