Over 500 families affected by water shortage in Rukmalgama Housing Scheme

More than 500 families living in the Rukmalgama Housing Scheme are reportedly facing severe difficulties due to a lack of water for several days amid prevailing dry weather conditions.

In response to the situation, the National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) has placed several 1,000-litre water tanks and had begun supplying water to households.

However, residents claim that some of these tanks have yet to be filled. They further noted that, due to the high demand, water supplied to certain tanks runs out within approximately 30 minutes.

When inquired about the issue, a spokesperson for the Water Board stated that, as a temporary measure, water tanks have been installed within the housing scheme and steps have been taken to supply water to them using water bowsers.

The spokesperson also added that measures will be taken in the future to provide a permanent solution to the water shortage.

Residents pointed out that although a large water tank had been installed in the year 1980 to supply water to the Rukmalgama Housing Scheme, the authorities had discontinued its maintenance several years ago, resulting in a long-standing water issue in the area.
