The Executive Council of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) will today decide on further action to be taken if Chief Justice Mohan Peiris does not step down and continues to hold the post, its Secretary, Attorney-at-Law Ajith Pathirana told Ada Derana.

He went on say that a final decision will be taken in this regard at the meeting.

The BASL has called on the Chief Justice to tender his resignation in order to preserve the honour and integrity of the judiciary.

Issuing a statement the BASL alleged that Peiris was present at Temple Trees the night of Election Day (Jan 8) with several top officials and former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, when it has been alleged that a plot was hatched to keep the president in power by declaring a state of emergency.

“I is reiterated and emphasized that, it is absolutely essential for the Chief Justice and members of the judiciary to remain strictly separate and uninvolved in political and executive decisions,” said the statement issued following an emergency meeting of the Executive Council of the BASL.
