Court of Appeal dismisses Shashindra’s petition

March 2, 2015   11:28 am

Court of Appeal on Monday (2) dismissed the petition filed by ousted Chief Minister Shashindra Rajapaksa seeking to make the appointment of Harin Fernando as the Uva Chief Minister illegal.

The respondents in the case include former Governor of the Uva Province Nanda Matthew, and thirty four Provincial Councillors, including incumbent Chief Minister Fernando.

Fernando sworn in as the new Chief Minister as the former Government failed to maintain a majority in January.

Harin Fernando received the highest number of preferential votes 173,993 at the election contesting for the Badulla District on the United National Party (UNP) ticket. Shashindra Rajapaksa received 96,619 preferential votes from Monaragala District. Fernando’s victory with a big margin has demonstrated that he was a big favourite of the masses.
