Parliament to be dissolved only after electoral reforms

April 19, 2015   05:51 pm

The Parliament will be dissolved only after the amendments to electoral reforms passed in the Parliament, sources close to the government said.

This had been discussed at a special all party conference which was held on Sunday (19) at the Presidential Secretariat with the participation of President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

According to the government 100-day pledge, it was scheduled to prepare election laws by 2 March, and pass the new system by 17 March.

Earlier, the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) also asserted that the opposition will comply with the new Government to pass the 19th Amendment, if constitutional changes take place for new electoral reforms. The SLFP prepared its proposals on electoral reforms as the 20th Amendment to the constitution and circulated among Party Leaders and to media last week.
