US Secretary of State John Kerry, who arrived in Colombo for a two-day visit, called on President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on Saturday (2) afternoon.

The US official will also meet leaders of the main Tamil parties and civil society representatives.
Kerry, the first US secretary of state to visit the country in a decade, was received at Colombo International Airport by Sri Lankan counterpart Mangala Samaraweera.

The US expects Sri Lanka to give journalists freedom of expression and return lands belonging to Tamils in the north acquired by the state for military purposes.

Kerry’s visit came following years of strained relations between the US and Sri Lanka’s previous government led by Mahinda Rajapaksa.
