UPFA to ask President to extend the term of LG bodies

The United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) is to make an appeal in its bid to request the President to further extend the term of the Local Government (LG) bodies.

Issuing a statement, UPFA General Secretary and Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) National Organiser, Susil Premajayantha, pointed out the term of LG bodies should be extended, since the Election Department needs more time to hold polls with the new electoral system which is about to be implemented through the 20th Amendment.

However, Cabinet Spokesman Minister Rajitha Senaratne on Friday (8) said the term of the LG bodies will not be further extended.

The official term of the LG bodies were scheduled to end in March, however, it had been extended until May 15 by the government due to the prevailing political situation in the country.

Minister of Public Order & Christian Affairs, John Amaratunga, had also said a decision has been taken to dissolve LG institutions by next Friday (15) and that a special committee will also be appointed to probe into the corruption and malpractice which might have taken place within them.
