A conspiracy is underway to confine former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and former Minister Wimal Weerawansa ahead of the forthcoming general election, the National Freedom Front (NFF) said today (17).

The observation was made by NFF Media Spokesman Mohammed Muzammil at a press conference held in Colombo.

“There is a move to confine those who speak against the new Government,” he added, saying that the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID), which came to effect in February through an extraordinary gazette notification, has become yet another functional division of the Prime Minister’s Office.

However, the Prime Minister issuing a statement last week assured that the Government guarantees the independence of the investigations carried out by all the law enforcement agencies in the country including the FCID and denies any sort of undue political intervention to the enforcement of law.
