Reporter trampled to death by an elephant in Minneriya

A provincial reporter, who was covering an incident of Wild Life officials attempting to drive away wild jumbos in a village in Minneriya, has been killed by a charging elephant, the police say.


“The reporter was killed while he was covering the incident in Papisiya Wewa area in Minneriya,” the Police Spokesperson said.


Priyantha Rathnayake, a correspondent attached to Derana TV, was 46-year-old at the time of his tragic death.


The remains of the deceased have been deposited at the Hingurakgoda Base hospital pending an autopsy.
