Police use tear gas, water cannon to disperse protestors

October 29, 2015   03:09 pm

Police used water cannons and tear gas to disperse protesters blocking Ward Place and causing a traffic jam, the Ada Derana reporter confirmed.

The protest march was organized by the University Student to pressurize the government over several issues within the universities.

However, as the students attempted to march towards the University Grants Commission (UGC), they were stopped by the anti-riot squad and later the police fired tear-gas and water cannon, the reporter added.

Severe traffic congestion was also reported at Ward Place and Town Hall areas in Colombo due to the protest.

Update: The Bambalapitiya police have arrested 39 students including two monks who had engaged in the protest, the Police Spokesperson says.
