Planned island-wide strike called off

A planned island-wide strike by a collective of government, semi-government and private sector trade unions scheduled for tomorrow have been called off after talks with the government.


Representatives of the trade unions earlier held a discussion with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and government officials regarding theirs objection to certain proposals made in the 2016 budget.


The strike action was about to commence from 7.00 am on Tuesday.


Lanka Private Bus Owners Association Chairman Gemunu WijeratneThe also says they will not join the strike tomorrow. JVP Politburo member and Head of the National Trade Union Center (NTUC), K.D. Lalkantha added that their trade unions will not join the strike as well.
