Meethotamulla attack: Kolonnawa UC Chairman remanded

Chairman of the Kolonnawa Urban Council Ravindra Udaya Shantha has been remanded till January 4 for allegedly assaulting a group of people while they were protesting against a garbage dump site in Meethotamulla.
 

The Chairman was remanded when he was produced before the Colombo Additional Magistrate, Ada Derana reporter said.
 

The police have launched an investigation to identify the group of people who had allegedly attacked residents of Meethotamulla while they were protesting against the garbage dump on December 27.
 

Several people, who sustained injuries following the attack, were also admitted to the Colombo National hospital.

 
Around 700 metric tons of waste is disposed daily at the 16-acre garbage dump site in Meethotamulla threatening the homes and lives of the people living in the area, it was reported.
 

The mountainous garbage dumps have slipped causing damages to a large number of houses while villagers also complain of health risks.
