Zonal school sports meets postponed due to hot weather

March 23, 2016   06:18 pm

Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam says that all zonal-level school sports meets scheduled to be held in March have been postponed till May due to warm weather conditions prevailing in the country.

He stated that the Ministry of Education decided to hold the zonal sports meets within the educational system during the end of May or the beginning of April due to the extremely hot weather conditions being experienced in the country.

The decision was taken based on the advice of the Meteorology Department and medical experts, he said addressing a press briefing today (23).

The Minister said that the Met Department has forecasted temperatures to reach 38°C this month and that medical experts say such temperatures could be harmful to the health of school children.

Therefore school sports meets held under zonal level have been postponed till the start of May while provincial and national-level sports meets will take place in July and September respectively, Kariyawasam added.
