April 16, 2016   08:37 am

The T56 rifle and 5 revolvers stolen from the Laggala police station on Thursday have been discovered near the water tank of a temple in Laggala, police spokesman said.

Following a search carried out based information received at 6.00am this morning, police officers found the firearms near a water tank in the premises of the Sandagala Viharaya in Wellewela, around 5km from the Laggala police station.

Police suspect that the individuals who stole the guns had left them behind at the temple premises.

A T56 rifle and 5 revolvers were stolen from the police station at around 1.00am on Thursday (14) by an individual who had opened the locked armory. However, no ammunition had been stolen by the suspect.

Three police officers who were on duty at the Laggala police station at the time were interdicted.

Acting Inspector General of Police S.M. Wickremesinghe had ordered the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to investigate the theft of firearms.
