The Embilipitiya Magistrate’s Court today (05) directed the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to conclude investigations in connection with the death of Sumith Prasanna Jayawardena during a clash with police in Embilipitiya before May 18.

The instructions were issued when the case was taken up for hearing before Additional Magistrate Prasanna Fernando this afternoon (04), Ada Derana reporter said.

Meanwhile, former ASP of Embilipitiya Police Station, Chamil Dharmaratne, who was arrested and remanded in connection with the incident, has been further remanded until May 18.

The former Embilipitiya ASP was arrested on suspicion over the death of Jayawardena, a father of one, who died following the clash involving police officers and villagers during a celebration at his residence.

The National Police Commission (NPC) later announced that 12 cops, who were on duty when the clash erupted, were given charge sheets.
