Described as a milestone in the China - Sri Lanka relations, an Agreement on Economic and Technical Cooperation between the Governments of Sri Lanka and China was signed yesterday (25th May).

“This agreement, is signed with a view to further developing friendly relations and economic and technical cooperation and China will grant RMB 600 million (about Rs.13800 million) and this money will be spent constructing a Kidney Hospital in Polonnaruwa District,” a statement said.

This grant assistance was initiated by high level discussions President Maithripala Sirisena had with Chinese President Xi Jinping when President Sirisena visited China in 2015.

This historic agreement towards building a hospital is very unique as it is specializing in Kidney diseases and only the other similar occasion was when former President J.R. Jayawardene received Sri Jayawardenepura Hospital from Japan in 19805.

On behalf of Sri Lanka, the Ambassador Dr. Karunasena Kodituwakku signed the agreement, the statement said.
