Minister of Labor and Trade Unions Relations, W D J Seneviratne says that although the UPFA government led by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa succeeded in winning the war against terrorism, it failed to foster unity within the communities in Sri Lanka.

“Although we won that war, we did not implement a process to foster unity between Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim races at the time.

“I was also part of that government. I am not accusing only Mahinda Rajapaksa I am also accusing myself as I was a partner of that,” he said addressing an event on Friday.

“We did not think about that.” We thought that now the war is over and that once we build their roads, government offices and hospitals all will be right, he said.

He also said that discussions are currently ongoing to make former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa the second leader of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP).

In the future, we will be able to reunite the SLFP without splitting it and form a government together with the Rajapaksas and under the leadership of Maithripala Sirisena, Seneviratne said.
