Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government Faiszer Musthapha today said that the government will not allow the functions of the 23 local government bodies, of which the official term expired from midnight yesterday, to be crippled in any way and that it will make sure they run smoothly.

He said that the government hopes to hold the LG elections as soon as possible after the Delimitation Commission completes its work.

The minister pointed out that the powers and functions of the Municipal Councils will be taken over by the commissioner until next election takes place while Urban Councils and Prashiya Sabhas will come under their respective Secretaries.

He stated that the decision not to extend the tenure of the 23 LG bodies was a government decision taken after consulting the President and Prime Minister.
