Former foreign minister Professor G.L. Peiris today charged that the drafting of a new constitution by the Yahapalana (Good Governance) government is a “fraud”.

Addressing a ‘Joint Opposition’ press conference in Colombo, he said that a new Constitution is not necessary when the existing constitution can be amended.

He claimed that the government is fulfilling the demands of various extremists under the guise of drafting a new constitution.

Former Minister Professor Tissa Vitharana, who also spoke at the media briefing, condemned the statement made by the Chief Minister of the Northern Province C.V. Wigneswaran.

He demanded that the President strongly advise the Chief Minister and his group from doing such things.
