Appeals Court orders release of Tiran Alles

November 8, 2016   10:41 am

The Court of Appeal today suspended the remand order on former MP Tiran Alles issued by Colombo High Court and ordered to release him, Ada Derana reporter said.

A revision petition filed by Alles, owner of the Mawbima newspaper, seeking to suspend the remand order which he claims is against the law, was taken up before the Court of Appeals today (8).

On November 02, three persons including Alles were remanded till November 10 by the Colombo High Court, on charges of misappropriating public funds through the Reconstruction and Development Agency (RADA) in 2006.

Alles, who was the former Chairman of RADA, Dr Saliya Wickramasuriya, former Chief Operating Officer (COO) of RADA, and Jayantha Dias Samarasinghe, a former accountant of the agency, were remanded after appearing before the court.

In August, the Attorney General recommended to file indictments in the High Court against four individuals including Tiran Alles and former senior LTTE leader Emil Kanthan, who is the second defendant in the case.

Kanthan, the former North and Eastern Provinces LTTE Financial Head, had been absconding, however attorneys informed court that a would be represented by a lawyer.
