Alleged hunter shot dead at Wasgamuwa National Park

A 36-year-old person has been killed following a shooting incident between wildlife officials and a group of people at the Wasgamuwa National Park last evening (17).


The group of people that reportedly entered into the national park illegally with firearms had opened fire at the officials while attempting to inspect them, according to police.


The person who sustained life-threatening injuries was pronounced dead upon his admission to the Mahiyangana hospital. His remains are deposited at the same hospital pending a post-mortem, an official said.


The wildlife officials have also seized a firearm from the possession of the suspect who was a resident of Medakanda area.
