Amid pressure from the international community, this government is sacrificing war heroes, the Pivithuru Hela Urumaya (PHU) alleged on Monday.

PHU leader Udaya Gammanpila while speaking to reporters at a press conference held in Colombo, pointed out the government intends to sacrifice war heroes in a bid to reduce pressure from the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), Tamil Diaspora groups and Non-Governmental organizations.

“The separatists will only be satisfied if a swarm of soldiers were put behind bars before the next UNHRC session in March,” he said.

Gammanpila also predicted that two soldiers accused in the case of missing journalist Prageeth Eknaligoda are to be arrested again next Wednesday.

“The police have requested the Court to remand them on the false allegation of pressurising the witnesses in the case,” he said. Gammanpila also pointed out there is no legal barrier to discuss matters related to an ongoing investigation. “After filing a case, there would be no background to speak this issue, but now there is only a magisterial inquiry,” he said.
