A 29-year-old Sri Lankan refugee has been arrested near Vellore in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu for allegedly threatening passersby and motorists.

The Walajapet police invoked Section 7 (1) (A) of the Criminal Law Amendment Act 1932 against M Shankar of the Sri Lankan Refugee camp in Palar Anaicut for disturbing the people working in a sand yard in the vicinity.

He along with his friends had been threatening and extorting money from lorry drivers transporting sand from the riverbed for a long time now. After the sand quarry was closed a few months ago, they had started to threaten the passersby for money, said the police official.
