Parliamentary debate on making waste disposal an essential service

The Parliamentary debate on the Meethotamulla landfill site disaster and waste management commenced today (28). 

The gazette issued under President Maithripala Sirisena’s directive under the Public Security Act Clause NO 16 declaring garbage disposal by any authority of the Public Administration is an essential service will also be up for debate.

President Maithripala Sirisena convened the Parliament for a special session today to seek a national response to waste management.

In order for the directive to pass, it should receive the majority vote of the parliament. 

The debate which commenced at 9.30am today and conclude at 6.30pm.
