If the government is complaining that they cannot pay off local and foreign loans and the interest accumulated, they clearly cannot run the country and should therefore resign, MP Bandula Gunawardana states.

He stated this at the press conference held today (16) at the Joint Opposition’s Economic Research Unit.

The MP proceeded to say the following:

“The government continues to blame the instability of the economy on the debts incurred by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa. However, with the fall in world oil prices, the government gained a profit of USD 4378 million in the year 2016. Even with such a sum at hand, if they still cannot pay off the loans, the government should definitely resign.”

Meanwhile, MP G. L. Peiris stated that the per capita income of Sri Lanka had taken a significant plunge after 15 years.

He condemned the government for allocating a sum of Rs. 1200 million for the purchase of luxury vehicles for their use, when they should be utilizing the money to compensate for the damages caused by the Meethotamulla garbage heap collapse instead.
