A recent report has placed Sri Lanka above India, Pakistan and other South Asian countries in terms of healthcare.

Sri Lanka has scored 72.8 points in the Healthcare Access and Quality index published in The Lancet report whereas India has just 44.8 points.

“Highly standardised cause of death and risk factor estimates generated through the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) to improve and expand the quantification of personal health-care access and quality for 195 countries and territories from 1990 to 2015” had been analysed to conclude the research.

In particular, mortality rates from 32 diseases which should not be fatal in presence of effective medical care had been looked at.

In South Asia, Sri Lanka has an impressive score of 72.8 points. Bhutan and Bangladesh have 52.7 and 51.7 respectively. Pakistan is below India with 43.1 points.

The data, in the report, takes a look at 195 countries, between the years 1990-2015, and assesses the measuring mortality rates from 32 diseases which should not be fatal in presence of effective medical care.

The results have revealed that India, in spite of socio-economic growth in the given time-period, has not managed to achieve its goals in health care department.

As per the report, Sri Lanka’s health care index has seen a significant increase in last 25 years, going up from 56.9 in 1990 to 72.8 in 2015.
